چکیده

This work investigates the sidebranch characteristics of pivalic acid dendrites grown under convection-free (cf) and diffuso-convective (dc) conditions for supercoolings over the range of 0.1–1.0K. Results indicate that the distance from the dendrite tip to the first detectable sidebranch and to the first detectable coarsening event normalized by the tip radius, R; are independent of the supercooling. The sidebranch spacing in the uniform region near the dendrite tip, and the spacing in the coarsening region when normalized by R; do not appear to have a significant dependence on convection or supercooling. When the envelope enclosing all sidebranches from the tip to the end of the coarsening region was fitted to a power law as a function of distance from the tip, we found that the pre-exponential and exponential terms were significantly different for the convection-free and diffuso-convective results. This supports the observation that the absence of convection seems to alter the size of the sidebranches. Lastly, the predictions from theoretical models of sidebranch spacings are much lower than experimental observations, while the predicted sidebranch amplitudes were larger than those observed. r 2004 Elsevier B.V. Evidence for tip velocity oscillations in dendritic solidification.

Dendritic growth experiments were conducted in the reduced-convection environment aboard the space shuttle Columbia on STS-87. Spectral analysis was performed on 30-frame/s video data during growths of isothermal dendrites. Results indicate that pivalic acid dendrites exhibit a subtle oscillatory behavior of the axial growth velocity near the tip, with a frequency component that is associated w...

Rensselaer Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment

The Rensselaer Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (RIDGE) is a continuation of the Isolated Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE), which flew on three space flight experiments aboard the space shuttle Columbia. The RIDGE is an extension to the completed flight experiments by IDGE, to further investigate phenomenon uncovered in the analysis of data obtained by these earlier efforts. The first t...

Experimental measurements of sidebranching in thermal dendrites under terrestrial-gravity and microgravity conditions.

We perform sidebranch measurements on pure succinonitrile dendrites grown in both microgravity and terrestrial-gravity conditions for a set of supercoolings within the range 0.1-1.0 K. Two distinct types of sidebranch regions, uniform and coarsening, exist, and are characterized by the distance from the tip at which the region began, D(i), and the average spacing of sidebranches within that reg...

Time-evolving Growth Rates in Microgravity-grown Pivalic Acid Dendrites

Pivalic acid dendrites were crystallized under a range of thermal supercoolings and observed aboard the space shuttle Columbia as part of the USMP-4 Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment. The dendrites exhibit an initial transient period of growth, followed by an acceleration period, which may gradually tend toward a constant growth rate. The variation of this non-steady-state behavior on the ...
